Panama Legalizes Marijuana

On October 13th, 2021 Panama Law 242 regulates the right of all patients to have access to medical cannabis treatment. The law dictates strict control, safety, quality, surveillance and proper care by qualified medical practitioners.

Article 7. Patient records. For the purposes of this Law, the National Directorate of Pharmacies and Drugs of the Ministry of Health is in charge of establishing user patient registries of cannabis and its derivatives for medicinal and therapeutic use, certified by the treating physician and reserved. This record must include, at a minimum, the information on the disease, and the treating physician, as well as the doses and frequency of treatment.


Article 8. The Ministry of Health will prepare the technical documents that guide the prescription and medical treatment with Cannabis and its derivatives for medicinal and therapeutic purposes, according to existing scientific evidence and current health standards.


The Law regulates many applications that are related to medical cannabis from medical, veterinary, therapeutic, scientific and research purposes.
